LSC's Innovations in Technology Conference

As consumers of financial products, legal aid clients are frequently targeted by unscrupulous businesses and predatory credit offers. When low-income consumers default on mortgages, credit card debt, payday loans, auto loans and student loans, the debt collectors start calling. And then they sue. Innovative use of technology holds tremendous potential to increase the assistance available to self-represented litigants and legal aid clients facing these issues. Technology can also enhance legal service providers’ capacity to serve them. In this session, participants will learn about how online forms, mobile technology and other tech tools are being used across the country to expand services for low-income people who have to navigate consumer debt cases. Participants will leave the session with practical tips and ideas on how to implement similar projects in their local communities. Panelists will also address how these technologies and innovative service delivery models can help individuals with consumer issues who have limited English proficiency (LEP) as well as geographical barriers to accessing traditional legal assistance.
