Legal Check-Up Applications: Helping Parties Find the Right Legal Path to Solve Their Problem

In Accessing Justice in the Contemporary USA: Findings from the Community Needs and Services Study, Professor Rebecca Sandefur discusses the scope and nature of justiciable issues that people confront. The research shows that people were most likely to address their problems themselves (46%), do nothing (16%), or get help from family or friends (16%). Only 15% of respondents sought formal help.The ABA Standing Committee on the Delivery Legal Services has developed model legal check-ups in the areas of family , consumer , employment , and housing law for two jurisdictions: Illinois and Maryland. Three tech platforms are being tested: http://www.neotalogic.com; http://www.curolegal.com and A2J from http://www.cali.org. This session will report on the results of these test discuss technology and best practice issues, and discuss how a Legal Checkup Application can help users identify their legal problems and find solutions. The session will also highlight the “Legal Risk Detector” developed by the Center for Elder Law & Justice, that allows medical personnel, social workers and other allied professionals to screen older adults for common legal issues.
