Building a Mobile-first Website: Challenges and Rewards

For most statewide websites, a very high percentage of visitors come from mobile devices. It is increasingly important to make and keep statewide websites functional and accessible to mobile-dependent users, regardless of which device, internet connection, or data plan they possess. In late 2016, Statewide Legal Services of CT received a TIG to redesign its website using a mobile-first approach that incorporated the findings and recommendations from LSC’s Statewide Website Assessment Project. This workshop will explore the rewards and challenges of rebuilding a statewide website that provides a robust library of self-help resources to mobile users while providing users with a high-quality experience across the site. Connecticut staff rebuilt CTLawHelp.org and its Triage and Online Classes to be mobile-first. They also made a Drupal template – freely available to others interested in replicating all or parts of the project.
