Non-profit legal aid organizations hold a wealth of knowledge about substantive areas of law as well as the clients they serve. However, they may not be sophisticated about building technology and scaling successful technology products. What is the best approach for a legal aid organization to develop and launch a new technology for the broader legal services marketplace. Should it be done in-house or with an outside partner? When should a non-profit consider partnering with a development firm to build a new technology or customize an existing technology? What are some ways to structure that relationship to maximize scale and impact? This presentation will address these questions and more, using a case study of a product currently underway via a partnership between Lawyers Trust Fund of Illinois and CuroLegal.
