From Understanding to Action: Designing Online Resources to Promote Legal Literacy and Empowerment

Recent academic and user research has shed new light on methods for designing online resources to help people not only understand their legal issue, but also to build the skills, confidence, and motivation to take action to resolve it. This workshop will spotlight approaches that four programs have used to develop online legal rights resources in the areas of housing rights in NYC, immigrant rights, and disaster response in Puerto Rico that enable people to engage with the law, make sense of complex issues, and feel equipped to take the next step. We'll discuss user research that has informed these approaches and an Open Society Foundations-funded project to develop an assessment framework focused on legal empowerment for New York's statewide legal website.
